Imprints of Scars and Broken Pieces as Sore Memories
I painted the future eased of memories and family
as I journeyed again with freshly plucked courage,
knitted with life beyond the hurts encumbered;
signatured with the bloods of my kiths and kins.
For the picture of family is many broken pieces
that healing has taken a distant run.
Family is memories. And memories tells a story,
of our sitting room, a battlefield for words and weapons
where Father and Mother take turn for flesh and blood.
In the face of fracas, we still said the Lord’s prayer
to early morning devotions and to more that came with it.
I always cried behind the curtain for many fears.
Fears that cannot be contained with the sound of silence.
Hospital was my new home because Mother knew
how to fall sick from lacerated body,
for which Father deserves a medal.
Should I blame a man who loved to keep his family in check?
Family is war. To mother, it was war against divorce,
for better, for worse was the coveted trophy
and Mother was ready to carry this trophy
with heavy heart of love for Christ and family.
But with Father’s signature beneath my breast
I painted the future eased of memories and family.
