a home built on the altar

they open their hearts so wide to offer

what is therein. yours is musty;

it blows some ashes; the ashen memory

a friend becomes. mine seems so

lucky for just seeing one, i have kept

it safe against breakage. tell me,

what past escapes burning? i’ve brought

enough healing; i’ve brought enough

tranquility to douse your burnt heart.

i brought enough incense to bless this

ruin. & before this altar, i promise to

appear as a night with an assured moon

& some shining stars, if perhaps i don’t

appear as a morning with its splendor.

O’ beloved, take this love kneaded with candor,

make a jewel of it. live, rejoice, & laugh;

it’s a beautiful home we built.
