Fragments of a Broken Voice
I rise with balls of sweat,
Flowing down in torrents
Through my cheekbones,
Down to my palpitating chest.
Who can read words from quivering lips?
Each sound spells survival
Each breath is punctuated with silence.
Silence, a word that dies before its birth.
Listen as words are articulated,
From glottis, clutched in a labyrinth of pains,
And if my voice is heard from a distant hill,
Do not ignore; it is a desperate pleading
A plea of sagging breasts,
Whose nipples are trapped between the
gory teeth of abuse.
As I wince and shriek,
Let the fragments
Of my broken voice be a clarion call.
